Astros Win World Series For First Time Ever

November 2, 2017

The Houston Astros have won the World Series for the first time, defeating the Dodgers 5-1 at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night in the seventh game of this year’s championship event.

George Springer was named series MVP after tying Reggie Jackson and Chase Utley with his fifth home run of the 2017 “Fall Classic.”

The Astros jumped on Dodgers starter Yu Darvish for two runs in the first inning and three more in the second frame.  Springer led off the game with a double and scored on an error before Alex Bregman was plated on a ground ball by Jose Altuve.  In the second inning, Marwin Gonzales doubled, starter Lance McCullers, Jr. picked up his first Major League RBI with a single, and Springer slammed a two-run homer.

The win was credited to former Pirates pitcher Charlie Morton after McCullers was kept in the game for only two-and-a-third innings.  Morton closed the game with four innings of relief work, allowing only one run and two hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

The Dodgers outhit the Astros 6-to-5, but pinch-hitter Andre Ethier drove in their only run in the sixth inning.

Darvish lasted only one-and-two-thirds innings.  He was charged with five runs (4 earned) and three hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

This year’s World Series was the third in the last four years to go the distance.
