Thousands of visitors have once again poured into Franklin for the annual Applefest extravaganza, and despite any bad weather, activities will run through late Sunday (Oct. 6).
Saturday’s activities will begin with a fly-in and breakfast at Venango Regional Airport, and the Franklin Retail Association’s merchants’ auction from 8:30 AM until 10:30 AM at the Barrow-Civic’s Little Theatre. The Applefest 5K “Race for Any Pace” is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM on Liberty Street.
Resuming at 10:00 AM in the city’s parks will be the arts-and-crafts sales, entertainment, and offerings from numerous food booths.
A Kids Cuisine Cooking Contest joins the annual apple pie baking contest this year, and the annual apple eating contest will be held at 4:30 PM.
Once the race has been completed, the main business area on Liberty Street will remain closed for performances by the Franklin High School Black Knight Marching Band, the Studio 22 Dancers and the Franklin YMCA Magic All-Star Cheerleaders.
Contest winners will be announced at the South Park bandstand at about 5:00 PM. The Atlantic Avenue United Brethren Church will serve a chicken-and-noodle dinner from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. And, another presentation of the Franklin Civic Operetta Association’s production of “Oklahoma!” will begin at 7:30 PM at the Barrow-Civic Theatre.
On Sunday, Franklin Elks Lodge #110 will serve a breakfast from 7:00 AM until 11:00 AM. An antique and classic “car cruise” is scheduled for 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM on both Liberty and 12th Streets. Another fly-in/breakfast will take place at Venango Regional Airport, and a special Sunday edition of the city’s farmers’ market will run from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
Although park activities, including the arts-and-crafts and food booths, will open back up at 10:00 AM, the first musical entertainment on Sunday is scheduled for 12:00 noon. Afternoon events will also include an apple cider press demonstration, and the Easter Seals of Western Pennsylvania’s benefit “duck race” at the fountain in West Park.
