Alvarez Slugs, But Bucs Lose Bradenton Finale

Despite four hits, including a home run, and three RBI’s from Pedro Alvarez on Wednesday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost their final preseason game at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida 7-4 to the Minnesota Twins.

The Bucs (12-18-1) will close their Grapefruit League schedule with a game against the New York Yankees (13-17) in Tampa on Thursday afternoon, will head north on Friday, will play their “AA” affiliate in Altoona on Saturday afternoon, and are scheduled to open the regular season at home on Monday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs.

In Wednesday’s loss, Starling Marte recorded three of the Pirates’ 12 hits, and Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-5.  Opening day starter A.J. Burnett pitched three innings, and allowed two runs and four hits.

Four Minnesota runs were charged to Pittsburgh reliever Chris Leroux.  Danny Ortiz homered for the Twins (16-14), and Doug Bernier recorded three hits.
