878 Area Code To Be Added To Western Pennsylvania

The state Public Utility Commission announced Friday that a new area code will be introduced to parts of western Pennsylvania in the next couple of months.

This change, however, will not affect the “814″ telephone code area.

The new “878″ area code will at first be used in the current “724″ zone, and later in the “412″ region.  Officials believe the supply of available “724″ numbers is nearly depleted.

The new “878″ code will be assigned to new customers and new phone lines.
