29 Hits, 22 Runs In Pirates’ Romp Over Blue Jays

Starling Marte, Jose Tabata and starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez all homered, and the Pittsburgh Pirates pounded out a total of 29 hits off four Toronto pitchers in a 22-5 preseason romp of the Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida.

Marte went 5-for-6, Tabata was 4-for-4, and both players scored twice and drove in four runs.

Pittsburgh’s Gaby Sanchez contributed three hits and an RBI, Jordy Mercer was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s, Russell Martin tallied a pair of hits, and Andrew McCutchen recorded two hits, two runs and two RBI’s, and is now batting .556 (20-for-36) this spring.

Even Rodriguez chipped in with a homer and a single, two RBI’s and two runs scored.  The Bucs’ starter worked four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs and six hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Matt Tuiasosopo homered for the Blue Jays.

The Pirates (13-9-3), who will start the regular season at home against the Chicago Cubs on Monday, will take on the Minnesota Twins in Grapefruit League action on Wednesday.
